Sound design and Audio Production
Below is a selection of different projects I have worked on in sound design and audio production; recording various artists in different genres
CACHAÇA DUVALE COMMERCIAL
The Bartender: Choyce Kotorie
Director and Principal Videography: John Castillo
Additional Videography: Caylamina Roberts and Liz Bellotti
Sound Design: Priam David Mastering: Craig Murdock
Song Title: Drover’s Way
Band Name: RedFox
Role/Position: Recording Engineer, Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer
Studio Location: Studio A at McGill University
Notes: The track was recorded live in the studio. For optimal instrument isolation, I made the decision to record the Bass through a D.I. box while having the drums in an ISO booth. Subsequently, considerable time was dedicated to refining the mic positioning for the violin, guitar, and banjo to attain the most desirable tone color.
Song Title: Bach’s Cello Suite No.1, Allemande
Artist Name: Joshua Morris
Role/Position: Recording Engineer, Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer
Studio Location: Clara Hall
Notes: The goal for this recording was to achieve a natural tone color for the cello without the frequency spectrum becoming saturated in the low end, as well as to achieve an accurate direct-to-reverb ratio with the microphone placements in the hall between the mains', rooms', and spots'.
Song Title: Prendre Le Moment
Artist Name: Sim Patenaude
Role/Position: Recording Engineer, Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer
Studio Location: My apartment
Notes: Only the voice and piano were recorded, all other auxiliary sounds are midi, created by the artist himself. In capturing the piano sound, I chose to layer the piano part several times, with each new layer being played with either a different timbre (using the una corda or practice mute pedals) or in a different octave. In the recording, these different piano sounds are not used only to be played on top of one another, but rather to change gradually from one timbre to the next over the course of the song.
Song Title: Rhythm Revival
Artists: Sam Robinson on Bass and Sam Neumann on Drums
Role/Position: Recording Engineer, Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer
Studio Location: Clara Hall
Notes: I was interested in exploring unique and uncommon drum microphone techniques. I had a stereo pair positioned in two metal trash cans next to the drum set, with hypercardioid ribbon microphones pointed down towards the bottom of the trash cans. A drum room sound was recorded at the end of a garden hose, which was wrapped around and through the instruments of the drum set. A Shure 520DX was used as a mono room mic placed high and above the drummer. Finally, two M150s were placed out in the hallway with both doors of Clara hall opened. In the mix, not all these mic techniques are used simultaneously, but rather transitions from one set up to the next.
